Artificial Sweetener List

The following is an artificial sweetener list outlining all products available worldwide sorted alphabetically. The first section is for the sweetener compounds (Saccharin), the second section, towards the end of the page, is for the brand names (Sweet'N Low). I have rated them out of 20 a higher score being better.

There are 8 individual unique artificial sweeteners in use today. Another one Dulcin was discovered in 1884 and was used until the 1950s when it was declared unsafe. Nevertheless it is probably no worse than any of the others. However even Saccharin, discovered in 1879 was not the first artificial sweetener. That dubious place of honor goes to a deadly sweetener called sapa which the ancient Romans discovered, and which they used to sweeten foods and wine. Today it is knows as sugar of lead or lead acetate. It causes lead poisoning. Needless to say it is no longer used!
